Vision Therapy
For many children, seeing clearly is not enough. Reading and hand-eye coordination tasks can be very difficult. The act of sight
not only
includes ones eyes, but it
also
includes the neurological activity that processes the visual information. Throwing a ball or reading a book is a learned activity to do either well takes practice. Those who do it best are those who started learning at the earliest age. Sight plays an important role in the learning of these activities. Sight is the steering mechanism it is the main activity that provides feedback regarding what really is happening. We provide Vision Therapy to help children learn how to process visual information and develop better hand-eye coordination.
InfantSee Program
InfantSEE is a public health program designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care to improve a child's quality of life. Under this program, which was made available in Summer 2005, our optometrists will provide a comprehensive infant eye assessment within the first year of life as a
no cost public health service
. For more information, please call our office.
Bifocals
Some evidence suggests wearing eyeglasses with bifocal or progressive multifocal lenses may slow the progression of nearsightedness in some children. The mechanism here appears to be that the added magnifying power in these lenses reduces focusing fatigue during reading and other close work, a problem that may contribute to increasing myopia.
A five-year study published in the February 2007 issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science produced an interesting result involving nearsighted children whose mother and father were also nearsighted. These children, who wore eyeglasses with progressive multifocal lenses during the course of the study, had less progression of their myopia than similar children who wore eyeglasses with regular, single vision lenses.
If you are concerned about your child becoming more nearsighted year-to-year, call us to schedule a comprehensive eye exam and consultation. We can evaluate the progression of their myopia and discuss the best treatment options with you.See us for a consultation.
Glasses for Children
When your child receives their comprehensive eye exam, you may find that they need glasses. If this is new to your child it may cause them some uneasiness. Reassure your child that they will be able to see better and consider these tips for picking out the glasses:
-Allow the child to help pick their own frames. If your child likes the glasses, they will wear them more easily.
-Allow your child to pick their own glasses case to keep them safe when they are not wearing them.
-Children younger than 2 tend to do better in a plastic frame.
-If the frame is metal, make sure they have spring hinges, which are more durable.
-Securing the glasses with an elastic strap will help keep them in place for active toddlers.
-Help your child practice proper cleaning techniques with a lens cloth.
-For more severe prescriptions, special lenses called high-index lenses are thinner and lighter than plastic.
-Polycarbonate lenses work well for kids. Polycarbonate is a tough, transparent, impact-resistant thermoplastic which has built in UV protection.
They are especially good if the child plays sports.
